On very rare occasions the laboratory may not be able to get a clear “Positive” or “Negative” result from your sample. There are several potential reasons for why this may have occurred. It is important to note that an indeterminate result should be repeated because a conclusive answer has not been reached. If the laboratory obtained an indeterminate result, we will contact you to arrange a free-of-charge retest.
A pain in the ar**! But seriously, COVID-19 is a disease that originates from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It is a nasty acute respiratory syndrome that affects your lungs – hence breathing issues.
Currently, we can test for the detection of the SARS-CoV-2 through Antigen testing (tests specifically looking for the antigens produced by the virus) and PCR testing (polymerase chain reaction, it looks for the virus’ DNA).
Antigen testing can be performed with a result being obtained within 15 minutes of providing the sample. PCR samples must be sent to our specialist laboratory for analysis. PCR testing is considered the “Gold Standard” for the diagnosis of COVID-19, where Antigen rapid kits are deemed to be a very effective screening test for almost instant answers. All patients who receive a positive Antigen result should be retested by PCR methods for confirmation.
If you are positive for your PCR test you will receive your results by email and you will be advised to contact your GP/Doctor. All Positive PCR results will be notified to the HPSC for contact tracing purposes.
A positive result by rapid antigen test indicates that you have tested positive for the detection of COVID-19 specific antigens. This would usually mean that you have an active covid infection. It’s important to note that rapid antigen testing is a screening method and all positives should be confirmed through PCR analysis.
Taking a specimen for PCR testing typically involves a sample being taken from both your throat and nasal passage using a suitable swab.
There is no age limit for COVID-19 testing using either PCR or Antigen based methods. It is important to note however that very young children may find the swabbing process uncomfortable. Our swab takers will take every care to make the process as easy as possible, however, some levels of discomfort may be expressed. If you intend to have your child tested, please feel free to contact us by phone or email ahead of time to make prior arrangements.

Whilst it isn’t compulsory to be tested ahead of returning to your office, we have assisted many people in getting a COVID-19 test result ahead of returning to their place of work. If you or your company would like to know more about this service, please email us on info@hhc.ie.
Taking a swab or blood sample typically takes about 5 – 10 minutes. However, our medical staff will spend as much time as is necessary with you to always ensure your comfort.
